Two seriously injured in east Wichita garage fire

Two people suffered burns when fire erupted in a garage in east Wichita Thursday night, authorities said.

The fire was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North Terrace, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. That’s northwest of Central and Oliver.

Two men, ages 30 and 50, were taken to the burn unit of Via Christi Hospital St. Francis. Initial reports indicated their injuries were not critical, but their conditions were downgraded to critical by EMS, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said.

The 600 block of North Terrace was blocked off so fire crews could extinguish the blaze, which was confined to the garage in the back of the lot.

Scanner communications indicated the men were changing a fuel pump when gasoline ignited, starting the fire.
