UPDATE: Body pulled from river had gunshot wound

Law enforcement is investigating after a body showing signs of a gunshot wound was pulled from the river near Seneca and McLean late Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Mike Linnehan of Wichita Patrol West said the body was discovered by some kayakers on the Arkansas River at about 5:30 p.m. The initial Sedgwick County 911 call reported a submersion underneath the bridge.

When the fire rescue crew arrived, they found the body of a man believed to be in his 40s. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

“Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the individual had a gunshot wound,” Linnehan said. “It is still an ongoing investigation.”

There was no reported gunshots in the area.

The coroner, a criminal investigator and a technical rescue team, as well as police, were at the scene Monday night investigating.

“They are looking for any kind of evidence that may be associated with this,” Linnehan said.

As of 8:30 p.m. Monday, a light rain was falling. It appeared law enforcement had left the area by 9:15 p.m.

Investigators had also been photographing a red car in the Mid-America All-Indian Center parking lot.
