The man who drowned over the weekend at Lake Afton has been identified as 22-year-old Javon Cortez Barber of Wichita.

Barber was trying to swim out to a buoy about 100 yards offshore, authorities have said, when he began struggling and went under the water around 9:20 p.m. Saturday. Fire department divers found his body about 2 1/2 hours later in 7 to 8 feet of water perhaps 100 to 165 feet from the shoreline.

Authorities have said Barber headed back to shore before reaching the buoy and drowned on the way back. At least one other person was with him at the time.
