One person killed in gang-related shooting, police say
Police were investigating a fatal shooting Saturday night in a strip mall parking lot at 13th and Vesta, between Oliver and Hillside.
One person was killed in the shooting, which police are calling gang-related. The victim was shot in a crowded parking lot at about 7:30 p.m., Sgt. Jamie Crouch said, and the suspect then sped away in a vehicle.
Officers worked hard to interview at least 30 witnesses and canvass a potential crime scene that extended several blocks because of the direction the suspect fled – all in the expectation of a strong thunderstorm moving into the area, Crouch said.
That storm struck shortly before 10 p.m., with rain lashing the city and strong winds buffeting investigators.
Temperatures in the 90s and elevated humidity sent the heat index soaring for much of the day, and one police officer suffered a possible heat stroke at the shooting scene. He was receiving treatment, Crouch said.
