Where to find free summer meals for Wichita kids

Wichita students have begun their summer break, but many school cafeterias and other sites will continue to serve meals to hungry children.

Forty-four sites around the city – including two new outdoor sites this year – will offer free breakfasts, lunches or afternoon snacks as part of Kid Power Cafe, an annual summer food program that began Monday and runs through Aug. 11.

The program is run by the Wichita school district and is paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The program is open to all children younger than 18, not just students who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year. No meal reservations are required, and there are no qualifying guidelines or paperwork to fill out.

New this year are two outdoor locations – West Douglas Park, 3201 W. Douglas, and Schweiter Park at Lincoln and Hillside – to better serve children living near those areas.

Some sites will offer meals throughout the length of the program, while others will offer meals only periodically during the coming months. Some will offer both breakfast and lunch.

Two sites – Evergreen Recreation Center, 2700 N. Woodland, and Colvin Elementary School, 2820 S. Roosevelt – will offer an afternoon snack between 4 and 4:30 p.m. each weekday beginning May 30.

Here are this year’s locations and meal times. The program is offered weekdays unless otherwise specified. All locations will be closed May 29 and July 4.
