A 19-year-old woman was killed and a 21-year-old man was injured late Thursday night when the motorcycle they were on crashed while they were fleeing law enforcement officers in west Wichita, authorities said.

The passenger, Mallory Scofield, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The driver, Joshua Wynn, was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where he was listed in serious condition Friday evening.

The incident began at about 11:24 p.m. Thursday when a sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop at Meridian and 27th Street South, authorities said.

The rider on the 2000 Yamaha sped off, however, and the deputy lost sight of the motorcycle a few minutes later.

The motorcycle was spotted again on K-42, but speeds topped 100 miles an hour so the pursuit was called off.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper found the motorcycle crashed at about 11:35 p.m. at Hayden and 135th Street West, south of Maple.

According to a Highway Patrol report, the motorcycle was going north on 135th at a high speed and struck a curb on the west side, ejecting Wynn and Scofield.
