Toddler wasn't breathing when police arrived; now his mother is in jail
A toddler living in Riverside is in critical condition and his mother and her boyfriend are in jail, Wichita police announced Friday night.
Officers were sent to a residence in the 800 block block of North Woodrow at about 7:45 a.m. Friday, where they found the 2-year-old boy not breathing, Officer Charley Davidson said in a statement released Friday night.
The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A preliminary investigation revealed the boy had sustained "substantial" injuries to his face and head, Davidson said.
The boy's 22-year-old mother and her 25-year-old boyfriend were arrested, Davidson said. Law enforcement records indicate Lucas Diel, 25, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail just after 6:30 p.m. on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.
Elizabeth Woolheater, 22, was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, records show.
The investigation into the incident is continuing, he said.
