Best high school players honored on 2025 Wichita Eagle boys basketball All-Metro team

The Wichita Eagle announced its 21st annual All-Metro boys basketball team on Monday, honoring some of the best high school players in the state of Kansas from the 2024-25 season.

The All-Metro team features the top players and the top coaches from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties based on statistics, team success, postseason recognition and area coaches’ feedback. Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Corbin Johnson was named the Player of the Year after leading the Crusaders to back-to-back Class 5A state championships.

Wichita Eagle All-Metro boys basketball team

Eli Benning, Northwest senior

The career assists leader at Northwest, Benning teamed with fellow seniors D.J. Brown and River Peters to form one of the most talented trios in the state. The 5-foot-11 point guard, who is committed to Friends, averaged 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.7 steals and was voted third team all-6A by The Eagle.

Reed Friesen, Hesston senior

The 6-foot-6 senior was named the 3A Player of the Year and a top-10 player in Kansas by The Eagle after leading Hesston to its fourth Class 3A state title in the last five years. Friesen averaged 17.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.7 steals for the 24-win Swathers.

Corbin Johnson, Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior

After leading the Crusaders to back-to-back Class 5A state championships, Johnson was named the 5A Player of the Year and a Top-5 player in Kansas by The Eagle. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 18.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals to help Kapaun recover from a 5-3 start to win 17 games in a row to finish the season.

Josh Kim, Andover senior

Voted the Most Valuable Player in AV-CTL Division II, Kim was also named a top-10 player in Kansas by The Eagle after leading Andover to a fourth-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament. The 6-foot-3 guard, who is committed to Washington (Mo.) University, averaged 18.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

Brayden Myovela, Maize junior

No one was more clutch than Myovela at the Class 6A state tournament, as his shot in the final seconds helped Maize knock off No. 1 seed Shawnee Mission South and spurred a third-place run. Paired with seniors Alan Hanna and Alec Grill, the 6-foot-4 forward averaged 14.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.2 steals for an 18-win Maize team.

Chase Robinson, Heights senior

The engine who powered the offense for Heights, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged a team-high 15.1 points on 58% shooting to go along with 8.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.9 blocks. He helped lead the Falcons to a 21-4 record and was named a second team all-6A player by The Eagle.

Jack Ulwelling, Derby senior

The Most Valuable Player in AV-CTL Division I, Ulwelling averaged a team-best 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists to help lead Derby to a 21-2 record and a Class 6A state tournament appearance. He was also named a second team all-6A player by The Eagle.

Amalachi Wilkins, Heights senior

The lone 2-time All-Metro selection, the Washburn commit averaged 11.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.7 steals and 2.9 blocks to help lead the Falcons back to the Class 6A semifinals. The 6-foot-8 forward was named a top-15 player in Kansas and a first team all-6A player by The Eagle.

Garrett Roth, Hesston coach

Since taking over for Greg Raleigh following a championship season in 2022, Roth has led the Swathers to two Class 3A state titles in his three seasons at the helm. No one could keep up with Hesston at the state tournament, as the 24-win Swathers swept their way to another state title. The team was led by key players in seniors Reed Friesen and Asher Deutschendorf, junior Ty Unruh and sophomore Drew Bartell.
