Best high school players honored on 2025 Wichita Eagle girls basketball All-Metro team

The Wichita Eagle announced its 21st annual All-Metro girls basketball team on Monday, honoring some of the best high school players in the state of Kansas from the 2024-25 season.

The All-Metro team features the top players and the top coaches from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties based on statistics, team success, postseason recognition and area coaches’ feedback. Hesston senior Kendall Brueggen was named the Player of the Year after leading the Swathers to a third-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament.

Wichita Eagle All-Metro girls basketball team

Macayla Askew, Derby junior

A 2-time All-Metro selection, Askew helped lead a 21-win Derby team to the Class 6A state final. The 6-foot-2 post was named a Top-15 player in Kansas by The Eagle and voted Most Valuable Player in AV-CTL Division I after averaging a team-high 13.8 point, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.3 blocks.

KaMyra Barber, Heights senior

A 2-way force who helped lead a 21-win Heights team to a third-place finish at the Class 6A state tournament. Barber, a 5-foot-8 guard, was named a third team all-6A player by The Eagle after averaging 13.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.3 steals.

Bella Bouddhara, Andover sophomore

A breakout star this season, Bouddhara showed a scoring tenacity matched by few to help propel Andover to a 23-2 record and third-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament. The 5-foot-7 guard was voted Most Valuable Player in AV-CTL Division II and named a first team all-5A player by The Eagle after averaging 17 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.4 steals.

Kendal Brueggen, Hesston senior

A Missouri State commit and 2-time All-Metro selection, Brueggen was named a Top-5 player in Kansas this season by The Eagle after averaging 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.3 steals. The 5-foot-10 guard helped lead the Swathers to a 25-1 record and third-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament.

Zoey Buckner-Franklin, Kapaun Mt. Carmel sophomore

A 2-time All-Metro pick, Buckner-Franklin’s star power was just as strong at the Class 5A level playing in her first season at Kapaun after winning a 2A title at Independent last season. The 5-foot-7 guard averaged 23.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals while earning first team all-5A honors from The Eagle.

SaMiyah Ellis, Heights senior

A 2-time All-Metro selection, Ellis hit a buzzer-beating, game-winning shot at the Class 6A state tournament to help lift the Falcons to the semifinals. The Texas Rio Grande Valley commit was named a first team all-6A player by The Eagle after averaging 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals.

Aliyah Green, Andover senior

A 6-foot-1 stalwart who has helped Andover finished with a 47-3 record the last two seasons, Green was voted Defensive Player of the Year in AV-CTL Division II. A 2-sport star who signed with Butler Community College to play both basketball and volleyball, Green averaged 13.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals and was named a second team all-5A player by The Eagle.

Jaela Thompson, Maize South sophomore

The 5-foot-10 guard made an immediate impact in her first season at Maize South, as the transfer earned third team all-5A honors from The Eagle after averaging 10.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.9 steals. Thompson also broke the school record for single-season assists and steals production.

Derek Schutte, Halstead coach

Halstead won its first state championship in school history, just months after winning the school’s first volleyball title with largely the same group of girls. The Dragons (25-1) overcame the loss of a star player late in the season and mounted a double-digit comeback in the 3A final to beat Silver Lake and capture the championship. Halstead was led this season by seniors Dalaina Schutte, Brett Young and Kaci Young with juniors Aisnley Farmer, Tess Williams and Addisen Wills, sophomores Bailey Bernal, Addison Mabry, Onnyka Nedich, Jordy Schroeder, Piper Schroeder, Khloey Shauf and freshman Annie Williams.
