Defense is what Andale girls basketball takes pride in and the reason why the team is ranked in the top five of the latest Class 4A rankings.

And defense was why Andale prevailed in a battle two ranked 4A teams on Tuesday, as No. 5-ranked Andale smothered No. 6-ranked Clearwater in a 38-22 victory at home.

Not only did Andale (12-4) sweep the season series against a formidable AV-CTL Division 4 opponent, it snapped the six-game winning streak for Clearwater (13-4) and secured the tiebreaker with both teams tied in the loss column and vying for position in the third and fourth spots in the Class 4A West sub-state standings.

Andale’s defense was once again on full display, holding Clearwater just 19% shooting from the floor and 7% shooting beyond the arc.

Clearwater only trailed 23-17 early in the third quarter, but that’s when Andale’s defense took over.

A steal and layup from McKenzie Fairchild ignited a 15-2 run to put the game away, which included back-to-back three-pointers from Camryn Winter and Kelli Wegerer. Elizabeth Tjaden led Clearwater with 10 points.

After losing twice to Wellington, Andale no longer has a chance of winning the AV-CTL Division 4 title but did leapfrog Clearwater in the divisional standings by improving to 4-2 in league play.

Clearwater (13-4) and Andale (12-4) are both positioned well with a two-game lead in the loss column on Clay Center (12-6) to potentially host sub-states in the postseason. The top four teams in the West sub-state will host games in March.
