Caleb Grill, a former all-state Kansas high school basketball player at Maize, announced on Wednesday that he will be seeking a transfer from Iowa State.

Grill, a 6-foot-3 guard, just wrapped up his freshman season with the Cyclones, which finished the season with a 12-20 record. He appeared in 29 games with two starts, shot 31.4% from the field and averaged 2.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 0.5 steals in 13.8 minutes per game.

“I would like to take this time to say thank you to the Iowa State fans for supporting me and my teammates,” Grill wrote in his announcement on Twitter. “To my teammates, thank you for taking me under your wing and helping me grow as a player and person. I want to thank Coach (Steve) Prohm and his staff for giving me the opportunity to play at Iowa State. I will always be a fan like I have been most of my life. After thoughtful consideration and discussing what would be best for me with my family, I have decided to transfer from Iowa State.”

Grill was originally committed to South Dakota State in high school before then-coach T.J. Otzelberger left the school to accept the head coaching job at UNLV. Grill was released from his letter of intent and his recruiting soared during his senior season at Maize, as he ascended to as high as a top-150 recruit according to Rivals’ 2019 rankings.

At the time, Grill’s final three schools were Iowa State, Kansas State and UNLV. There was no indication of where Grill might be headed immediately following his announcement on Wednesday.
