Kansas high school state bowling results: Derby bowler rolls career-best to win title
Derby’s Morgan Henning rolled the best game of her career to cap off the best series of her career to capture the Class 6A individual championship at the Kansas high school state girls bowling tournament at Northrock Lanes on Friday.
Henning was in contention for first place after the first two games, but pulled away from the field with a score of 257 in the third game to polish off a career-best 717-pin series. Olathe East’s Macy Proctor was runner-up 57 pins behind Henning with a 660 series. She became the first individual girls state bowling champion from Derby.
The junior held a solid 196-pin scoring average entering the state tournament and had finished top-5 in all of her meets this season, but had never finished with a 700 series before. That changed when she delivered back-to-back good games with 234 and 226 to begin Friday, then finished with a career-best game of 257.
In the team race, Campus’ dynasty didn’t add another state championship to its collection, but did continue its strong tradition as one of the state’s premier programs.
The Colts were looking for their seventh state title in the last nine years, but instead settled for the program’s ninth straight state trophy of some kind with a runner-up finish to Olathe East, which won its first team state title with a team score of 3,269 pins followed by the Colts’ 3,074 team score.
Campus was led this year by two state medalists in junior McKenzie Craig, who topped her season-high series by 44 pins with a 629 series to finish seventh overall, and junior Savanna Hsu, who placed 14th with a 579 series. They were joined by freshman Caitlynn Clough (545), junior Kenzi Goupil (520), junior Allie Gentry (509) and senior Madison Walker (464).
Meanwhile, the boys’ team competition also featured a first-time winner in Washburn Rural, which finished with a team score of 3,711 pins to win the team race handily over Olathe Northwest (3,576) and Garden City (3,507). Olathe Northwest’s Thomas Mitchell won individual honors with a 759 series
In the 6A boys’ field, Campus senior Jacob Bush (654, 15th) and Wichita South freshman Timothy Dean (648, 17th) were the only state medalists from the Wichita area.
