Kansas high school girls golf state qualifiers: Five things to know from regionals
Following the state-qualifying girls golf tournaments played on Monday, Varsity Kansas has compiled five quick hitters to know coming away from the area’s results in the Kansas high school girls golf regional tournaments.
Below you can also find a complete list of every state qualifier from the Wichita area before the 36-hole state tournaments start next Monday — Class 6A in Emporia, Class 5A in Hutchinson, Class 4A in Salina and Class 3-1A in Hesston.
1. Clearwater sophomore goes season-low to win regional title
There was a surprise winner out at the Class 4A Buhler regional, as Clearwater sophomore Alexis Elliott took home individual medalist honors after posting an 8-over score of 79 at Hesston Golf Course. It was the first time this season Elliott had competed for Clearwater after playing previous tournaments for Campus in a co-op agreement between the schools. It was also by far the best performance of the season for Elliott, who shaved 10 strokes off her season-best score to win the regional championship.
2. Kapaun’s greatness once again on display
No team could come close to knocking off Kapaun Mount Carmel at the Class 5A Topeka Seaman regional, as the Crusaders shot a score of 318 to win the team title by nearly 40 strokes over runner-up Bishop Carroll. Kapaun placed all six of its golfers inside the top-13, as senior Kate Tilma won the individual title with a 1-under score of 70 and was followed by freshman Meg Tilma (76, fourth), Alexa Garrett (86, seventh), Eleanora Navarro (86, seventh), Madelyn Engel (94, 11th) and Sophia Gimino (98, 13th).
3. Winfield has reloaded for another run at a title
After winning the Class 4A team championship last season, Winfield is poised to challenge for two in a row next Monday despite graduating its top golfer. The Vikings claimed the Chanute regional team title easily with a team score of 362 — more than 70 strokes better than second place. Winfield has thrived this season on the strength of its top four golfers, as seniors Chaney Littell (88, second) and Celine Mendoza (94, fifth), junior Savanna Nickum (88, second) and sophomore Carley Littell (92, fourth) all finished top-five in Chanute. Winfield’s biggest road block to the state title once again appears to be Wamego, which won its regional with a team score of 358 and is the team that the Vikings edged out last year at state by five strokes.
4. Campus sends girls team to state for the first time
For the first time in program history, the Campus girls golf team is headed to state. Led by a top-three finish by sophomore Kiley Maier, who placed third with a round of 86 at Carey Park, the Colts are headed to the Class 6A state tournament after finishing third in the Hutchinson regional. Campus finished with a team score of 399 and other members of the history team are Sara Vulgamore, Analysia Morales, Alicia Jaramillo, Ava Baker and Kaitlynn Lechner all qualified.
5. Maize freshman takes perfect season to state
Maize freshman Kinslea Jones has won all nine tournaments in her first season of high school golf after claiming the individual title at the Class 5A Hays regional with a 1-under score of 71 at Smoky Hill. After shooting a personal-low of 64 last week to win the AV-CTL Division I title, Jones followed it up by winning the regional title over the field by 10 strokes. She also helped lead the Eagles to the state tournament with a runner-up finish in Hays with a team score of 383, as she will be joined at state by Charlotte Kerbs, Chloe Bartlett, Abigail Cavazos, Kira Packer and Emma Hays.
