The 10 high school boys teams that defined winning in Wichita in 2024-25

From dynasties to first-timers, boys high school teams in the Wichita metro area delivered some of the most memorable performances of the 2024-25 school year.

This list recognizes the top boys championship teams from schools in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties — programs that not only won state titles, but did so with dominance, resilience or historic impact.

Here’s a ranking of the most remarkable title runs, plus recognition for the best team that fell just short.

1. Andover Central Football

Andover Central dethroned perennial powerhouse Bishop Miege in a 49-42 thriller to win its first state title in program history. The Jaguars, coached by Derek Tuttle, finished 12-1 and ended a decade-long title streak for Kansas City-area schools. Key players included Jace Adler, Maddox Archibald, Jace Jefferson, Brandt Stupka, Dawson Rodd, Landon Preston, Brody DeGarmo, Andrew Clouse, Gaige Hurley, Grant Fuksa, Logan Lira and Logan Taggart.

2. Kapaun Mt. Carmel Track and Field

Few teams in any sport were more dominant. The Crusaders piled up 114 points and won all but one open race on the track to claim their second straight 5A title. Coached by Gage Garcia, Kapaun was led by individual champions Jack Guthridge, Daniel Enrique, Dawson Enriquez and Jackson Daniel. Medalists included Micah Amphone, Thomas Klosterman, Andrew Guyer, Lucian Winters, Will Niederee, Timothy Rowell and Eli Koster.

3. Andale Football

After a brief one-year hiatus from the top, Andale returned with a vengeance. Andale cruised to its fifth 3A championship in six years under coach Dylan Schmidt, capping a 13-0 season with a 36-19 win over Topeka Hayden. They outscored playoff opponents 269-54. Standouts included Cooper Marx, Landon Harp, Sam Harp, Ethan Schrandt, Isaiah Wilson, Jak Krehbiel, Jack Horsch, Hunter Grimes, Lane Parthemer, Cale Andre, Emery Craft and Curtis Dyke.

4. Kapaun Mt. Carmel Basketball

Steve Eck added another chapter to his storied coaching career, guiding the Crusaders to their second straight 5A title. After a rocky start, Kapaun rattled off 17 straight wins, culminating in a 58-55 overtime victory over Highland Park in the final. Key contributors included Corbin Johnson, Rocco Keller, Blaise Dalian, Jude Porter, Corey Daniels, Owen Herlocker and Jordan Maingu.

5. Trinity Academy Soccer

The Knights ended a long drought for Wichita-area teams in 4-1A boys soccer with a 17-4 campaign and a wild 4-3 championship win over Rose Hill. It marked the program’s first title since 2010. Coach Andrew Hackett’s squad was led by Cooper Mathews, Brice Wills, Grayson Payne, Wyatt Afman, George Diefenderfer and Landon Hale.

6. Rose Hill Wrestling

With 215.5 points at the 4A state meet, Rose Hill delivered a clear message: They’re the best in Kansas. Under coach Chris Saferite, the Rockets repeated as champions behind individual winners Johnny Leck, Damon Ingram, Samson Whitted and Thunder Page. Medalists included Sebastian Bentley, Trenton Richwine, Adam Bilby, Leven Jones, Tyren Emberson, Cole Rogers and Tucker Saferight.

7. Trinity Academy Baseball

One year after falling short in the 3A title game, Trinity broke through with its first baseball state championship, capping a 27-5 season with a 10-3 win over Hesston. First-year coach Matt Baty guided a roster that featured Josiah Sems, Braden Roberts, Caleb Back, Cam Killgore, Bryton Baty and Brody Lee.

8. Goddard Wrestling

The Lions’ dynasty continued with their 13th state title under coach Brett Means, including 10 of the last 11 in 5A. Goddard tallied 173 points and four individual champions: Jacob Goodwin, Preston Hagel, Jayden Grijalva and Oscar Gauana. Medalists included Harrison Glover, Eastyn Vieyra, Kaston McElwain, Kolton McElwain and Nick Miller.

9. Hesston Basketball

Few programs have matched Hesston’s recent success. The Swathers won their fourth 3A title in five years with a 24-2 season and a 51-46 win over Goodland in the championship. Coach Garrett Roth’s team was led by Reed Friesen, Drew Bartell, Asher Deutschendorf and Ty Unruh.

10. Andover Tennis In the loaded 5A field, Andover emerged on top for the first time since 2003. Coach Mark Cross’ squad leaned on its doubles teams to score 33 points and secure the title. Andrew Chan and Isaac Homan won the state doubles title, while Pierce Anderson and John Rather placed sixth in doubles, and Lad Oborny took seventh in singles.

Also State Champions: Andale track and field (4A), Andover swim and dive (5-1A), Collegiate golf (3A), Andover Central bowling (5A), Derby bowling (6A), Collegiate tennis (3-1A).

Best team to not win a title

Rose Hill soccer ended Bishop Miege’s 43-match postseason win streak and reign as eight-time defending state champions with a 2-0 semifinal victory on its home field in the Class 4-1A playoffs. The Rockets came up just short in a 4-3 heartbreaker against Trinity Academy in the final, but their 18-2 record and state runner-up finish cemented a season to remember.
