How Wichita kids can train with NWSL soccer powerhouse KC Current this week
The Kansas City Current, the league-leading powerhouse of the NWSL, is looking to grow its fan base in Wichita — and the club is starting by putting on a soccer clinic for the city’s up-and-coming players.
The NWSL Shield winners launched their “Current Caravan” fan tour in Wichita last week, the first stop on a multi-city regional road trip designed to expand the club’s footprint across the Midwest. The initiative is also designed to replicate the matchday energy of CPKC Stadium, the first purpose-built stadium for a women’s professional sports team.
Friday’s clinic runs from 6-8 p.m. at Scheels Stryker Complex and will be led by Current II goalkeeper coach Kyle Eno, a familiar face in Wichita soccer circles. Eno spent years coaching at local clubs: Friends University, Hutchinson Community College and with the Wichita Wings. He also operates Wichita Academy, a training program for area players.
The clinic is open to boys and girls ages 8-14, regardless of skill level. Registration costs $55 and can be completed through Eventbrite.
For Wichita fans, the timing couldn’t be better to jump on the Current bandwagon. With four matches left in the regular season, Kansas City sits atop the National Women’s Soccer League with an 18-2-2 record and 56 points, 16 more than any other team. Coached by former U.S. women’s national team boss Vlatko Andonovski and led by international superstars Temwa Chawinga and Debinha, the Current looks every bit like the championship favorite as the NWSL playoffs approach in November.
The next chances to watch KC play comes Monday night, when the Current face Angel City FC on CBS Sports Network at 9:30 p.m.
“The Current is the team of the Heartland, and we want to meet our fans from across the region,” said Jocelyn Monroe, Kansas City Current vice president of marketing. “We’re thrilled to bring the unmatched matchday energy of CPKC Stadium to fans across the Midwest, and we can’t wait to share that excitement with fans at our first stop in Wichita.”
Beyond the clinic, the Caravan’s Wichita events have given fans the chance to step inside the Current’s world with photo opportunities, interactive soccer spaces and a pop-up retail shop. The club plans to visit several more cities through 2025 and 2026, but Wichita got the honor of being the launch point.
