A familiar face to the local soccer scene made the season-opening game for the Wichita Wings a rousing success over the weekend.

Wichita native Kevin Ten Eyck, a Maize graduate and former Friends University standout, netted a hat trick to lead the Wichita Wings to an 11-6 win over the Amarillo Bombers at Hartman Arena on Saturday.

It was a dominant start to the 2021-22 season, picking up right where the Wings left off after playing for the Major Arena Soccer League 2 championship in July. The Wings (1-0) will be back in action at Hartman Arena for a 5 p.m. game on Sunday, Jan. 2 against the Omaha Kings (2-0).

In Saturday’s win, Ten Eyck scored all three of his goals in the first half, including two during a second period where the Wings blitzed the Bombers for six goals to take a 7-2 lead into halftime. A pair of former area high school standouts in Collin Lawter (Wichita Southeast) and Bransyn Felty (Buhler) each scored a goal during the second period, as did the team’s player-coach Roger Downing.

Wichita extended its lead to as much as 10-2 following a third-period brace from Benji Monreal and Jared Robbins’ second goal, while Felty also added his second goal in the fourth.
