Patrick Mahomes is working out with Rashee Rice. Here’s his update on Chiefs WR
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has gotten a chance to throw again to receiver Rashee Rice this week.
And his impression of the third-year wideout, who is coming off a season-ending knee injury?
“The expectations are high,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “He looks really good.”
Mahomes, as is now tradition early in the offseason, has been hosting Chiefs offensive players this week in Texas while going through workouts and passing drills.
It’s the first time in a while that he’s been able to participate with Rice. The Chiefs’ 2023 second-round pick suffered a knee injury in Week 4 and had season-ending surgery shortly after that.
The news in recent months regarding Rice, however, has been positive. Chiefs coach Andy Reid told The Star at the NFL Annual Meetings earlier this month that Rice was expected to be ready to go for training camp starting in July.
Rice has also shared progress videos of his workouts on social media as he’s continued to work toward full strength.
Mahomes said Wednesday he was impressed by how much Rice had accomplished this week.
“He’s catching the football,” Mahomes said. “I don’t know when we get back into the actual OTAs (organized team activities in May and June), how much he’ll be able to do, but he’s been able to do everything here, as far as running routes and everything like that.”
Mahomes said he was encouraged by the work he’d seen from his receivers in recent days. He also appreciated the team’s continuity there, as the Chiefs return Rice, Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy at wideout for a second straight season.
“Everything looks great right now,” Mahomes said. “I mean, getting the guys back healthy — as far as Rashee, and having Hollywood fully healthy and Xavier in Year 2 — I think the offense has a chance to be really, really good.”
