Players to watch in KC Chiefs vs. Cowboys: Maybe we’ll see another (Tyreek) ‘Hill Mary’
Sunday’s Chiefs-Cowboys showdown provides an opportunity to remember the “Hill Mary.”
The crazy touchdown occurred the during the teams’ 2017 meeting at Arlington, Texas. Two seconds remained in the first half and the Chiefs had possession at their 47. Instead of the attempting a Hail Mary, Alex Smith hit an uncovered Hill about 20 yards downfield.
All Cowboys defenders were rushing or positioned deep, guarding the goal line. When Hill started to find resistance after the catch, he bobbed and weaved through them all, picked up nice blocks from Demarcus Robinson and Travis Kelce, and scored..
The Cowboys won 28-17. But the play remains one of the most fascinating of Hill’s productive career.
Hill figures to play a major role again this time. Here are some other players, besides quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott, to keep an eye on Sunday.
Chiefs center Creed Humphrey
This dude is ballin’ out. A couple of weeks ago he was named to Pro Football Focus’ all-midseason team. Last week against the Raiders, he had an alert and funny moment when he drew an offsides penalty: Raiders defensive tackle Solomon Thomas jumped forward when Humphrey lifted his head, his helmet bumping Humphrey ... who flopped to the group on his back for effect.
Chiefs cornerback Rashad Fenton
The Chiefs will need all the help they can get against the Dallas passing game, and Fenton should be up to the task. Much of the focus at his position has centered on L’Jarius Sneed, who is having an outstanding season, and the return from injury of Charvarius Ward. But look who PFF has identified as the NFL’s top-rated corner this season: Fenton. He didn’t start against the Raiders, but his 43 snaps led the position group. Derek Carr had a paltry 56.3 passer rating when throwing his way, too.
Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb
The former Oklahoma star who caught passes from Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts in his three seasons in Norman is a rising star in Dallas now. Last week against the Falcons, Lamb and Dak Prescott hooked up for a 37-yard gain on the game’s second play. He finished with six receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half. He also added a 12-yard rush. Lamb is averaging 15.1 yards per reception and his 47 catches top the NFL’s No. 4-rated passing offense.
Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs
Diggs is a ball hawk. His eight interceptions lead the NFL. So do his return yards (142) and pick-6s (two, tied with Tampa Bay safety Mike Edwards). Mahomes will have to know the whereabouts of No. 7 at all times on Sunday. Diggs was covering Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts last weekend and made his latest interception look easy.
