Wichita State basketball plucks a 7-foot-2 center from transfer portal
It’s been a busy past week for Wichita State men’s basketball coach Paul Mills.
Will Berg, a 7-foot-2 center who spent the past three seasons at Purdue, on Friday became the third addition for the Shockers from the transfer portal in the last six days alone. The Stockholm, Sweden native will stand as one of the tallest players in WSU history.
Berg appeared in 22 games with three starts, averaging 1.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.2 blocks in 6.1 minutes per outing for the Boilermakers this past season. After redshirting his first year at Purdue, Berg has two years of eligibility remaining.
Berg doesn’t come with much proven production at the Big Ten level, but he should have more of an opportunity to showcase his abilities for the Shockers. He also fills a massive need for a team that did not have a center currently on its roster. Mills also added another frontcourt player in Temple 6-foot-8 forward Dillon Battie on Thursday.
WSU now has four players in its 2025 transfer portal recruiting class, which includes Battie, Berg, East Tennessee State wing Karon Boyd and UNC Greensboro guard Kenyon Giles.
The Shockers also have signed Barton Community College guard Keandre Kindell and high school products Tyrus Rathan-Mayes, Noah Hill and Pierre Couisnard Jr.
It’s still unclear how WSU is approaching the new 15-player roster construction, but if it is counting walk-ons toward that number, then the Shockers could be down to their final three spots to complete their 2025-26 roster.
