Xavier Bell marks two weeks in a row for Wichita State to win AAC Player of the Week

For a second week in a row, a Wichita State men’s basketball player has won top honors in the American Athletic Conference.

Wichita native Xavier Bell was named the AAC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 23.5 points to lead the Shockers to a 75-68 road win over Florida Atlantic and a 78-67 home win over Tulane last week.

He follows Corey Washington, who won the same award the previous week and earned national honors in the process.

Before Bell and Washington took home the Player of the Week honors, a Shocker player hadn’t earned the AAC’s weekly award since 2021. The Shockers are currently on a 6-game winning streak, which is the team’s longest since the 2020-21 season.

Bell scored nine of WSU’s final 14 points and had 24 total to help WSU pull out a road win and snap the 5-game winning streak of Florida Atlantic. Just three days later, Bell scored a game-high 23 points and made a key hustle play in the second half to spur the Shockers to the win over Tulane. Bell has notched seven 20-point games this season, tops on the team.

In less than one month, the Shockers have climbed out of last place in the conference standings and are currently one game back from fifth place with four games to go. WSU hosts second-place UAB on Thursday at Koch Arena for its only game this week.
