For first time since 2021, a Shocker basketball player named AAC Player of the Week
After a 2-0 week, culminating in an upset win over No. 14 Memphis, Wichita State junior forward Corey Washington racked up individual honors — both on a conference and national scale.
On Monday, Washington was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. On Tuesday, he picked up a prestigious national honor, as he was one of five players honored as an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
Washington averaged 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds to power the Shockers to wins over UTSA and Memphis at Koch Arena. He started the week with 17 points and 12 rebounds against UTSA, then ended with another monster double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds against Memphis.
He has hit double-digit scoring in 14 consecutive games and has notched seven double-doubles this season.
Washington is the first Shocker to earn AAC Player of the Week honors since Dexter Dennis did the same on March 8, 2021. Other former WSU players to win the award include Landry Shamet, Shaquille Morris, Markis McDuffie, Erik Stevenson, Tyson Etienne, Morris Udeze and Tyson Etienne.
The Shockers are back in action later this week in a showdown between the two hottest teams in the American, as WSU puts its 4-game winning streak on the line against Florida Atlantic and its 5-game winning streak in a showdown at 8 p.m. Central on Thursday in Boca Raton.
That game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
