Wichita State tabs ‘one of the best young minds’ in college tennis as next head coach
Wichita State has plucked as assistant coach from one of the nation’s top programs as its head coach of the men’s tennis team.
Darragh (pronounced DARE-uh) Glavin, an assistant coach the last two seasons at the University of Miami, was officially announced as the new coach by Wichita State on Monday. The 29-year-old replaces Danny Bryan, who left WSU for the head coaching job at LSU, his alma mater, last month.
The hire was made by WSU senior associate athletic director Brad Pittman.
“Darragh is a high-energy guy with a magnetic personality and a wealth of knowledge,” Pittman said in a statement. “He’s an up-and-comer in the tennis coaching world and we’re thrilled to be welcoming him and his family to Wichita.”
Originally from Ireland, Glavin was a standout player at Old Dominion from 2012-16 before joining the coaching ranks as a volunteer assistant at Princeton from 2017-19 and working as a full-time assistant at Delaware from 2019-20.
In the last two seasons at Miami, Glavin helped lead the Hurricanes to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA with Miami advancing to the second round this past season and finishing No. 30 in the ITA team rankings.
“My wife, Rachel and I are very excited to move our family to Wichita and become a part of this welcoming community,” Glavin said in a statement. “After being on campus and meeting with the staff, I could feel how strongly they care for our student-athletes and teams. I’m looking forward to working with the current players and continuing to build upon the tremendous growth that this program experienced under Coach Bryan.”
Bryan had steadily built the WSU program, peaking during the 2020-21 season when the Shockers reached a program-record No. 29 in the ITA team rankings and earned an NCAA tournament nod for the first time since 2016.
Glavin will attempt to turn the Shockers into a regular postseason team. His hiring at WSU was met with enthusiasm by his former bosses.
“I have known Darragh for a long time,” Miami head coach Aljosa Piric said in a statement. “He has grown into a great tennis coach, but more importantly into a coach that leads his players by example of hard work, integrity, and loyalty. He is one of the top young coaches, and will do wonderful things as a head coach of the Wichita State men’s tennis program. I look forward to following his career, and cheering him on from the distance.”
“Darragh is an outstanding coach and will surely lead Wichita State to prominence,” Delaware head coach Pablo Montana said in a statement. “He has one of the best young minds right now in college tennis and I have no doubt he will bring in top talent and develop his players to reach that next level.”
