Here’s which Shocker legendary moment reminded Gregg Marshall of his first hole-in-one

Wichita State men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall experienced his first hole-in-one as a golfer Friday at Crestview Country Club.

Marshall holed out from 141 yards on the par 3 No. 12 on the north course, using an 8-iron to carry the water and pinpoint it close enough to the hole for it to roll in.

Even better for Marshall, the hole-in-one was the “dagger” to an eventual match-play win over friend Andy “Dauney” Fletcher. Afterward, Marshall likened the adrenaline rush to one of his favorite Shocker basketball memories from the 2013 NCAA Tournament, a similar dagger shot that sealed WSU’s upset of No. 1 seed Gonzaga en route to the Final Four.

“It was like the deep three from Fred VanVleet where he winked at me after the ball found the bottom of the net,” Marshall told the Eagle. “You knew it was over when Fred hit that shot. It felt the same type of way for me. It was quite the adrenaline rush and a long time coming.

“It just felt great when it came off the club and it had a tiny draw and landed about five feet short of the hole and rolled in like a putt I couldn’t make if I was standing over it.”

Marshall’s son, Kellen, tweeted out a picture of his father’s accomplishment Friday afternoon, and Crestview confirmed the hole-in-one. Witnesses were Brent Bahner, TD O’Connell and Fletcher.

According to Trent Rommann, the assistant golf professional at the course, Crestview typically only sees between five to 10 holes-in-one per year.

“That was really cool to hear that,” Rommann said of the hole-in-one by Marshall, who has been a member at Crestview since he arrived in Wichita in 2007. “I’ve actually given him a couple of golf lessons here recently, and he’s really been improving.

“I’ve known people who have played golf for 60 years and never made a hole-in-one. So that’s pretty cool it’s his first hole-in-one. He said he was excited because now he has the whole Fourth of July weekend to soak it in.”
