Wichita State’s Alex Harden, Jamillah Bonner named All-MVC
Wichita State seniors Alex Harden and Jamillah Bonner were named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball teams on Wednesday.
Harden earned a first-team spot for the third time and Bonner is a repeat selection on the 11-person team. Harden also earned a third spot on the All-Defensive team and Bonner a second.
WSU junior Michaela Dapprich was named honorable mention All-MVC.
Individual honors are announced Thursday. Harden is the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, an honor a Shocker has won three straight seasons with Haleigh Lankster starting the streak in 2012. No MVC player has been named Defensive Player of the Year three times.
Harden, a guard from Springfield, Ill., averages 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and leads the MVC with an average of 3 steals. Bonner, a guard from Wichita, averages 13 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals.
Dapprich, a forward from Branson, Mo., averages 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.
Harden joins guard Kim Evans (1994-96), center Jennifer Kaczka (2000-02) and center Angela Buckner (2001, 03, 04) as Shocker selected three times to the first team. From 1990-2005, the Valley designated 10 players as first team with no second-team selections. From 2006-13, it divided the honors into first and second teams. Starting last season, it returned to naming a first team only, with 10 All-MVC picks plus an MVP, which will be announced Thursday.
WSU (26-4) opens play in the MVC Tournament at noon Friday in St. Charles, Mo. The top-seeded Shockers play either No. 8 Bradley or No. 9 Loyola.
