Two Kansas Jayhawks basketball players are injured. One could be out for a while
As the Kansas Jayhawks head into Christmas break, a pair of players will be nursing injuries.
Early in the second half of KU’s blowout win over Brown, transfer guard Rylan Griffen collided face-first with a Brown player.
Griffen stayed on the ground and was checked on by the KU medical staff. When he finally stood up, he held his face and exited the game to return to the locker room.
Coach Bill Self provided an update postgame.
“He got a knot on his eye, or right above his eye,” Self said. “They made it sound like to me that it would be Rocky Balboa in ‘Rocky II,’ the way his face was. But he can still see out of it and everything. He’ll be fine. He’ll get some pity sympathy when he gets home and maybe get some more home cooking or whatever because of it, but that’s about it.”
Griffen ended the game with seven points and three rebounds in 15 minutes. The Alabama transfer entered Sunday, averaging 6.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, KU forward Zach Clemence didn’t play on Sunday and was in street clothes. Clemence is averaging 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.3 minutes per game this season.
According to Self, Clemence suffered a groin injury during the week. He could miss time with the injury.
“Zach pulled his groin pretty significantly about three days ago,” Self said. “So he’s going to be out, and he may be out a while. We don’t know yet. It’s more significant. And sometimes those groins come, you come back too early and you’re going to tweak it again more likely. So we’ll wait and see how it responds after Christmas.”
The Jayhawks are next in action on Tuesday, Dec. 31, against West Virginia.
