Elite guard Frankie Collins is considering KU but expected to pick this Big Ten school

Michigan enters the week a heavy favorite to land Frankie Collins, one of the top point guards in the recruiting Class of 2021 and a basketball prospect who has included Kansas on his final list of eight schools.

Collins, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior point guard from Coronado High in Henderson, Nevada, said on Twitter he will choose between Michigan, Kansas, Georgetown, Auburn, Arizona State, New Mexico, USC and Vanderbilt at 9 p.m. Central Time Wednesday.

Rated the No. 69-ranked player in the Class of 2021 by Rivals.com, he averaged 13.9 points and 6.2 assists per game last season at Compass Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. As a sophomore he attended high school at Coronado, Nev., near Las Vegas.

Both Rivals.com and 247sports.com project Collins to Big Ten school Michigan, which is coached by Juwan Howard.

“They (Michigan coaches) started recruiting me at the beginning of my junior year and then they watched me play in December,” Collins told The Michigan Insider. “Ever since then we have been in touch all during the quarantine. Also, me and coach Howard have a relationship since I was in the fourth grade and I would always play against his son (Jace). We have a couple of pictures together as well.”

Collins recently had this to say about KU to Zagsblog.com: “Coach (Kurtis) Townsend and I have been talking since my sophomore year when they first offered me. He’s always been big on my development, getting in there and helping me. He was there when my uncle was at Cal so he’s always been helpful. I wanted to get out there and take a visit but I couldn’t because of COVID. Other than that, the relationship is good. We’ve been building for a long time now.”

Of Collins, Eric Bossi of Rivals.com wrote: “A driver who sets up teammates, defends well and plays above the rim, Collins is a high-octane guy who has been a steady performer.”

Ware considering KU

Kel’el Ware, a 6-10, 210-pound junior center from North Little Rock (Arkansas) High School, has included KU on his list of schools. Ware, the No. 63-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2022 according to Rivals.com, also is considering Arkansas, Auburn, Illinois, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and others.

KU offered Ware a scholarship on June 28, according to wholehogsports.com.

“They (KU coaches) said that I have a strong upside and I was able to score anywhere on the court,” Ware told wholehogsports.com.

Noted Rivals.com analyst Bossi: “I would be in favor of moving him up at least another 20-25 spots (in recruit rankings). The production isn’t always there, but his size, the way he moves, the development he’s showing on the skill side of things all suggest that he’s got a bright future and potential to develop into an elite level prospect. Arkansas has made him a priority and continues to do so. They’ve done will with locals lately and hope to continue the trend with Ware.”

Mikey Williams update

Mikey Williams, a 6-1 sophomore point guard from San Ysidro High School in San Diego, outlined his recruiting process to 247sports.com.

“I will probably cut my list to a top five around Christmas and then will probably commit after the season is over this year,” he told 247Sports.com.

He has a list of KU, USC, San Diego State, Memphis, Arizona State, North Carolina Central, Alabama State, Texas Southern, Hampton and Tennessee State.

Of KU, he told 247sports.com: ”They’re a blue blood. The atmosphere is crazy. The fanbase is crazy. I can see myself at a school with a huge atmosphere like that.”
