K-State women’s golfer wins prestigious amateur tournament at Augusta National
Carla Bernat has spent the past few days playing golf at Augusta National, a week before the iconic course hosts The Masters.
Many would consider that a dream come true.
But her trip to Georgia featured much more than just that. Not only did the Kansas State women’s golfer show off her skills at perhaps the most famous golf course in the world, she also won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur with three straight rounds of 68.
She finished the tournament at 12-under par, 1 stroke better than Asterisk Talley.
Bernat clinched the tournament by making a short putt for par on the final hole as NBC announcer Mike Tirico provided color on the TV broadcast.
Bernat pumped her first with enthusiasm when the ball fell into the cup.
Then she shared a hug with fellow Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal and accepted a trophy from Fred Ridley and Tirico in Butler Cabin.
Bernat is a K-State senior who was born in Castellon, Spain. She spent her first two years of college golf at Tulane, but she has thrived since joining the Wildcats as a transfer.
She is tied for third in program history with two individual wins. And she made a name for herself this weekend at Augusta National.
