The first set of college football rankings that genuinely mean something were released on Tuesday night.

Both Kansas State and Missouri cracked the top 25 in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings.

The Wildcats (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) debuted at No. 19, while the Tigers (6-2, 2-2 SEC) checked in at No. 24.

K-State sits behind two other Big 12 teams. BYU is the top rated team in the conference, as the undefeated Cougars reside at No. 9. Iowa State is next at No. 17. Colorado is just behind K-State at No. 20.

The Big 12 champion is essentially guaranteed a berth in the College Football Playoff. Any other team will need to finish high enough in the final CFP rankings to earn an at-large berth.

There are eight SEC teams in the current CFP top 25, led by No. 3 Georgia. Next in line is No. 5 Texas, followed by No. 7 Tennessee, No. 11 Alabama, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 15 LSU, No. 16 Ole Miss and then Missouri.

They are all chasing Oregon, the nation’s No. 1 ranked team.
