Wichita gets a taste of warm weather. Could it snow again before spring comes?
Two weeks after Wichita’s winter storm that brought about 5 inches of snow and negative wind chills to the area, residents may be impatiently waiting for spring.
This week is giving Wichitans a taste of the coming season, with highs sitting comfortably in the 60s and 70s. According to Mick McGuire with the National Weather Service’s Wichita office, the warmer-than-usual temperatures may hang around a bit longer.
“The next seven to 10 days … above-average temperatures are going to try to linger for our area,” McGuire said in a Feb. 6 interview.
Monday’s high reached into the 70s, while the highs for the rest of the week linger in the 50s and 60s, according to the latest forecast from the weather service.
These temperatures are above average for the second month of the year, McGuire said.
“We’re looking at normal highs in the upper 40s this time of year, and we’re looking at daytime highs over the upcoming week in the 50s and 60s on the vast majority of the days,” the meteorologist said.
But even with the warm temperatures, Wichita residents still have more than a month before spring begins Friday, March 20. According to McGuire, while there are no sure signs the area will see another snowfall this month, Wichita’s average last snowfall of the year is March 4.
“February in Wichita is our snowiest month of the year,” McGuire said. “In a typical February, the average (is) 3.6 inches. There could be an opportunity toward (the middle of the) month, but it doesn’t look like anything (serious) on the horizon.”
Here is this week’s weather forecast, from the NWS:
- Tuesday, Feb. 10: Mostly sunny and a high around 55 degrees. Low around 31.
- Wednesday, Feb. 11: Sunny with a high around 56 and a low around 37.
- Thursday, Feb. 12: Partly sunny and a high near 64. There’s a 20% chance of showers after midnight, a low around 39.
- Friday, Feb. 13: A 50% chance of rain and a high around 56. A low around 40.
- Saturday, Feb. 14: 80% chance of precipitation with a high around 52. A low around 35.
- Sunday, Feb. 15: Sunny and a high around 57 and a low around 38.
Will Wichita see a warm spring this year?
The first day of spring is more than a month away, and there are no sure signs of what Wichitans may see this year compared to typical years.
The Climate Prediction Center’s three-month outlook for March, April and May show equal chances of below-normal and above-normal temperatures for the Wichita area.
Looking at average springs in the area, Wichita usually sees continuing warm temperatures toward the end of March.
“At the beginning of March, we’re looking at normal highs in the low to mid-50s, and normal lows right around freezing,” McGuire said. “We see a pretty good rise by the end of March, where we’re looking at mid 60s are typical for daytime highs, the average low temperatures around 40.”
Then, the area will continue to see temperatures warm up through the end of spring.
“When we think about meteorological spring, beginning in March and ending in May . . . when we move into late May, normal highs are in the low 80s, and normal lows are in the lower 60s. So that would be a typical (spring) temperaturewise,” McGuire said.
Oh, and the first day of summer? Sunday, June 21.
