The city of Wichita is renewing a program that could help water customers save on their monthly bill.

Wichita has earmarked $125,000 for its water rebate program, renewed for another year, and is encouraging city customers to purchase water-saving devices in exchange for credit to their accounts.

Water customers can purchase and install things like indoor and outdoor irrigation controls, rain barrels, rain sensors, drought-tolerant landscaping and appliances like washers, dishwashers and toilets.

This is the 14th year of the program, but this year’s renewal is the first under Wichita’s new, permanent water restrictions. Those prohibitions began in September and, among other things, limit lawn-watering to every other day.

The 2026 rebate program has a new addition this year, with a $100 rebate offered to those who plant drought-tolerant grasses and shrubs on their property. Recommended grasses include bermudagrass, buffalograss and zoysiagrass.

The rebate also includes:

  • Up to $50 for a dual flush toilet conversion kit
  • Up to $100 for a hose/faucet irrigation controller
  • Up to $100 for a 45-gallon or larger rain barrel
  • Up to $100 for a rain sensor-shutoff
  • Up to $100 for a stand-alone or add-on irrigation controller
  • Up to $35 for toilet repair kit
  • Up to $100 for a high-efficiency washing machine
  • Up to $100 for a high-efficiency dishwasher

Wichitans can also pick up free water-saving shower heads and sink aerators at city hall while supplies last — an addition to the rebate program last year.

How to apply for the 2026 Wichita water rebate program

You can apply for the water rebate program on Wichita’s website.

The website has an online form customers can fill out that asks for basic information, as well as the item or items they purchased. Customers must provide the date of purchase, brand, model number and the cost.

Items have to be purchased on or after Jan. 1, 2026, to qualify for a rebate. Customers are limited to five rebated items per water account, only one of which can be for the new grasses and shrubs rebate.

People who applied in past years can apply again, as long as the items they seek rebates for were purchased and installed in calendar year 2026 and applications were postmarked within 90 days of purchase.

City spokesperson Megan Lovely told The Eagle that in recent years, the funds used for the rebate program were doled out before the end of the year, with most purchases being made in the spring and early summer.

In previous years, the city would do another push for the program around Black Friday, however, last year the funding was used up by mid-year.

“We urge anyone interested in getting a rebate not to wait,” Lovely said.
