Storm brings hail to Wichita. Does home, car insurance cover the damage in Kansas?
A storm that blew through Wichita Wednesday evening may have left behind hail damage to cars and homes around the city.
The storm system brought large hail to west Wichita and striking clouds. Wichita has seen a fair amount of precipitation this summer, including record June rain that brought localized flooding to some parts of the city.
If you have noticed hail damage from Wednesday night’s storm, you may be wondering if insurance will cover it? Here’s what Kansans should know.
Can I file a car insurance claim against hail damage in Kansas?
Car insurance is split into two factors, the Kansas Department of Insurance says, liability and property damage.
Liability insurance covers damages and medical expenses to another person’s property and person due to wrecks. Meanwhile, property damage coverage covers that caused by collisions, as well as comprehensive coverage for things like fire, vandalism, theft and severe weather damage — which hail would fall under.
Before filing an insurance claim, check your policy and make sure you have comprehensive damage policy and not just liability insurance.
The amount your insurance covers depends on your policy. Many require you to pay a deductible for the repair.
In Kansas, it’s illegal to drive without car insurance.
What about homeowner’s insurance, does it cover hail damage?
According to the Kansas Department of Insurance, your homeowner’s insurance covers a few main things: dwelling, contents, additional living expenses, liability, and medical payment.
Generally, the dwelling portion covers damage to the structure like fire, vandalism, windstorm and hail damage.

- File as soon as possible after the damage.
- Keep documentation of the damage.
- Make temporary repairs if necessary.
- Save your receipt for temporary repairs.
- Choose the right contractor.

According to the National Weather Service’s latest forecast, the chances of thunderstorms returns Thursday night through Friday morning, before clearing up during the day Friday. The rest of the week looks clear from rain, with the exception of chances of showers Monday.
