Snow is done in Wichita, Kansas. Here’s the new official record
Update 3:15 p.m.:
The snow stopped between 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Wichita, leaving behind a Feb. 17 record of 4.3 inches, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist.
The previous Feb. 17 record was 1.9 inches of snow in 1979. The measurement is taken at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. Weather information has been tracked since 1888.
The meteorologist said snowfall in Sedgwick County ranged from 4 to 7 inches.
Original 10:30 a.m.:
It didn’t take long for Thursday’s snow in Wichita to set a record.
The snow is expected to continue throughout most of the day, but already appears to have passed the previous Feb. 17 record of 1.9 inches set in 1979. Weather information has been tracked since 1888.
Vanessa Pearce, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Wichita, said there was around 2 inches of snow as of 8 a.m. The wind has affected the ability to get an exact measure.
The forecast calls for 6 to 8 inches.
Wichita saw rain around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, followed by sleet and freezing rain that continued until a light snow moved in around 4:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, she said. Heavier snow started just before 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the morning, then taper off this afternoon, she said.
The snow is expected to stop altogether around 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
