Ice and up to 2 inches of snow in winter weather advisory from NWS Wichita
A winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service office in Wichita predicts up to 2 inches of snow as well as ice and freezing temperatures between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning.
The NWS advisory, running from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, covers parts of central, south-central and southeast Kansas. Forecasters predict snow and freezing drizzle, with accumulations of up to 2 inches of snow and one-tenth of an inch of ice. Slippery road conditions could impact morning and evening commutes.
Weather service forecast maps show high temperatures will likely be a few degrees below freezing across much of central Kansas, but southeast Kansas will be warmer. The cold temperatures would come just two days after hot temperatures broke records in Kansas, including 76 degrees in Wichita, breaking a 96-year-old record high.
In Wichita specifically, the weather service forecast calls for a high temperature of around 31 degrees on Tuesday. A 30% chance of precipitation during the day starts with freezing drizzle during the morning, then snow and freezing drizzle during the afternoon. A blustery wind will have gusts of up to 29 mph.
Nighttime precipitation chances drop to 20%, with snow possible before and after midnight. The overnight low will be around 22 degrees, with wind gusts of up to 28 mph. Wednesday bring a 30% chance of snow, mainly before noon, with a high near 30 degrees and wind gusts of up to 20 mph.
The forecast was current as of Monday evening.
Meteorologists added in a hazardous weather outlook that another chance for snow is expected in southeast Kansas on Wednesday. Snow accumulations could be as high as 4 inches in the corner of the state.
