KS legislators have attempted to end daylight saving time change — which happens soon
More daylight is on its way, but the spring time change could mean negative side effects for some.
People will set their clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8 — the beginning of the daylight saving time. The time change will bring later sunsets for the area.
Daylight saving time became a legal requirement in 1966 by the Uniform Time Act, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. While state governments cannot change time zones or the length of daylight saving time, they are allowed to opt out of the practice entirely.
Kansas continues to observe daylight saving time, along with 47 other states, though at least one poll shows more than half of Americans want to end the practice. Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that do not observe the practice.
One example of Kansas legislators attempting to end the change is Senate Bill 1, which was introduced in January 2025 and would keep the state on permanent daylight saving time. The bill passed out of the Senate last March and moved to the House, which has taken no action to date.
Here’s what to know about the time change and how it may affect your sleep schedule.
How to prepare for the time change this spring
The Sleep Foundation recommends to slowly adjust your schedule leading up to daylight saving time so your body isn’t shocked. This could be done by gradually changing the timing of daily activities, like meals.
Sleeping well beforehand can also help with the adjustment, the Sleep Foundation says. If you aren’t well rested by the time the clock springs forward, the effects of the time change will be more intense. The foundation also recommends practicing relaxation techniques, like deep breathing methods.
Some other tips include:
- Set your clocks back before going to bed.
- Spend time outside after the time change.
- Have a light schedule Sunday and Monday following the time change.
- Have a set bedtime routine.
- Prioritize healthy foods.
- Keep naps to less than 20 minutes to prevent grogginess.
