See what is closed Thursday in Kansas for Jimmy Carter’s national day of mourning
If you’re planning on mailing a package in Wichita today, you’ll be out of luck.
That’s because Thursday, Jan. 9, is the national day of mourning for President Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29, 2024. President Joe Biden ordered a national day of mourning, and Gov. Laura Kelly followed suit, ordering all state offices to be closed for the holiday.
The U.S. Postal Service will be suspending all operations Thursday — that means that all locations will be closed, mail delivery will be suspended and package delivery will be limited, according to USPS’ website. There are eight post offices in Wichita.
Wichita State University is also closed Thursday for the day of mourning. According to a university press release, the university was also closed for days of mourning for President Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford in 2007 and George H. W. Bush in 2018.
Kansas State University and the University of Kansas are also closed.
Flags will be flown half-staff until sunset Jan. 28.
All state and federal offices will reopen Friday, Jan. 10. However, banks and businesses are not required to be closed during the holiday.
President Carter, who was born in Georgia, was 100 years old at the time of his death. He was the 39th president of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981. He was the longest-living president in U.S. history.
