A sweet pup in Kansas has found himself without a forever home after experiencing a horrible loss.

Sunny, a 2-year-old retriever mix, was brought into the Great Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Merriam after losing “the only family he has ever known,” the shelter said in a Nov. 4 Facebook post.

“His entire world came crashing down when his owner was tragically killed, leaving him homeless,” the shelter said in the post. “We are devoted to waiting however long it takes for Sunny to find his people, but it truly breaks our hearts to see him passed up time and time again.”

The shy pup took a while to get used to his surroundings because he was close to his owner.

“My original owner adored me, and I was a very happy boy,” a pet profile written from Sunny’s perspective says. “I led a rather sheltered life, so coming here with all the excitement and so many dogs and smells, it was overwhelming at first. I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to the hubbub, but I’m trying.”

According to the profile, Sunny is a warm presence who has an innocence “that is very endearing.” He is also playful and enjoys playing with toys and balls. He used to be in a foster home but had to come back to the shelter after one of the children in the house had allergies, his profile says.

“I was described as a ‘fabulous dog, calm and well behaved.’ I will thrive best as the only pet in the home,” his profile says. “I enjoy having all the love and attention to myself, so I can focus on being your loyal companion. You’ll find that I’m all the company you need-I’m always ready to be by your side, whether we’re exploring the great outdoors or snuggling up on the couch.”

Merriam is in the Kansas City, Missouri, area.
