Five people killed in fiery, wrong-way crash on I-70 in Kansas. One seriously hurt
Five people were killed and one person was hospitalized in serious condition after a wrong-way pickup driver crashed into a van, causing a fire on a Kansas interstate early Sunday morning.
Emergency crews responded to an injury accident at around 6:40 a.m. on I-70 in Wabaunsee County about half a mile east of Maple Hill, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report.
Investigators determined a 2001 Ford F-150 was eastbound in the westbound lanes of the interstate when it collided head-on with a 1999 Ford Econoline E350 van. The pickup truck burst into flames and became fully engulfed in the median.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified in the KHP report as 20-year-old Armando David Mascote, of Council Grove.
The driver of the van as well as three of four passengers also died at the scene. Troopers identified them as Jacinto Sanchez-Diaz, 33; Jose Luis Sanchez-Dias, 29; Francisco Daniel Rosa-Mejia, 18; and Cervando Flores, 19, all of Topeka.
The other passenger was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected serious injuries. He was identified in the report as Santos Narcizo Mendoza Capetillo, 37, of Lillington, North Carolina.
