Husband and wife killed in crash at K-42 and Maize
A husband and wife have died after a Thursday morning wreck on the southwest outskirts of Wichita.
Emergency crews were called at 10:18 a.m. to an injury accident on K-42 at Maize Road, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report.
Trooper Chad Crittenden said a man was driving east on K-42 in a 2012 Chrysler 200 and tried to turn left onto Maize Road. The Chrysler was hit on the passenger side by a man driving west on K-42 in 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. Witnesses reported that both drivers had a green light, Crittenden said.
The crash report states that the Chrysler car was turning left and the driver had a solid green light, but the driver failed to yield to the oncoming pickup. The truck driver was unable to slow down in time to prevent a collision.
The pickup was in the right lane, and the driver’s view was obstructed by a semi in the left lane, Crittenden said.
The man driving the car died at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, the crash report states. He was identified as Ira Duane Bonebright, 85, of Conway Springs. His wife, Betty Eileen Bonebright, 86, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 30-year-old Conway Springs man driving the pickup sustained a suspected minor injury, according to the crash report. Crittenden said he was checked and released by EMS at the scene.
