Passenger dies after rollover crash in Wichita County during winter storm, troopers say

A passenger died after a pickup crashed during a winter storm in western Kansas early Thursday morning, state troopers said.

Emergency crews were called at around 5:41 a.m. to an injury accident near I Road and 3 Road in Wichita County, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report. It happened on 3 Road about 8 miles north of K-96.

Investigators determined a 2012 Ford pickup truck was northbound when it drove off the roadway, over a culvert or bridge and rolled toward the driver’s side. The pickup landed on its roof, bounced, kept rolling and landed back on the wheels.

All three men were taken to a Wichita County hospital, where one of them died. He was identified in the KHP crash report as Carlos Enrique Gonzales, 36, of Leoti. The other two men, who are also from Leoti, had sustained suspected minor injuries.

The crash happened as a snow storm moved through the region. Kansas Highway Patrol dispatchers said in a tweet that one fatal crash was reported during the winter storm, along with 125 slide-offs, 62 non-injury accidents and nine injury-accidents.
