The city of Wichita is hosting a series of budget town halls through the end of May.

The town halls were requested by council members after voters overwhelmingly rejected a 1% sales tax.

The city said the town halls are to hear from residents on what their budget priorities are — especially if the city were to consider another sales tax vote.

Any new sales tax vote likely wouldn’t take place until next year.

To get the sales tax question on the August primary ballot, the city would have to submit ballot language by May 2.

Council members also said they weren’t interested in putting a sales tax question on the November ballot with a potential school bond vote for USD 259. A new state law then wouldn’t allow the city to put a sales tax vote on a ballot until March.

The town halls are being held in each council district, as well as a citywide one at Wichita City Hall.

The first town hall was held in District 3 this past Saturday.
