Deputy chief, 30-year veteran of department will become Wichita interim police chief

Wichita Police Deputy Chief Lemuel Moore, a 30-year veteran of the department, will become interim police chief, the city said Wednesday.

Police Chief Gordon Ramsay is slated to leave March 1. He announced in December that he would resign and move back to Minnesota.

Moore started out as a beat officer at Patrol East and Patrol North before moving to a number of other roles in the department, the release said. He has worked as a DARE and school resource officer, and as a detective in the undercover narcotics, financial crimes and exploited and missing child units.

“This extensive experience in serving Wichita uniquely qualifies him for the Interim Police Chief position,” said City Manager Robert Layton. He added Moore and Ramsay will work together to ensure a smooth transition for the department.

Wichita city officials plan to hire a private search firm to recruit a new police chief.
