Runaway kangaroo wreaks havoc on interstate, AL cops say. ‘Nobody believed it’
A runaway kangaroo that was involved in a two-vehicle crash shut down traffic in an Alabama county, authorities said.
“We’re chasing a kangaroo down here,” Macon County Sheriff André Brunson said in a live video on Facebook.
Authorities responded to the crash at about 12 p.m. Tuesday, April 29 in the southbound land of Interstate 85 in Macon County, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a news release.
Both southbound and northbound lanes had to be closed while troopers and the kangaroo’s owner tried to capture it, according to the release.
No one was injured in the crash, authorities told McClatchy News.
The kangaroo escaped from a nearby petting zoo, AL.com reported.
“When somebody said there’s a kangaroo. Of course I didn’t believe it, and nobody believed it, but I’m looking at him,” Brunson said in the video.
He said the kangaroo was tranquilized on a hill next to the interstate in Tuskegee before the video shows the owner carrying it in his arms.
“We see a little bit of everything here,” the sheriff said.
Tuskegee is about a 40-mile drive northeast from Montgomery.
