While out in the woods, something caught a South Carolina hunter’s attention: the sound of a little girl crying.

A 2-year-old girl went missing after last being seen lying down with her mother at home around 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, according to a Facebook post from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. She was located a few hours later when a deer hunter heard the sounds of her cries in a wooded area, deputies said.

The hunter called 911, which prompted first responders and a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division helicopter to search for the girl, according to the sheriff’s office. Rescuers found the girl and the hunters nearly a mile away from the girl’s home, deputies said.

After the girl was found, she was taken to an ambulance to be checked out, according to deputies.

“Other than being tired, thirsty, and frightened, the little girl was in good shape,” the sheriff’s office said in the post.

The sheriff’s office called it “truly a miraculous find” in its post. Facebook users were thankful for the little girl’s safe return.

“That is awesome. Thank God for those deer hunters. God bless you for finding the child safely. Thank you to all involved. God placed those hunters there for a reason,” one Facebook user wrote.

Newberry County borders the northwest tip of Richland County, where Columbia is located.
