Residents interested in helping shape the future of Kansas’ largest school district can now apply for the at-large seat on the Wichita school board.

The position is vacant after former board member Melody McCray-Miller died in February. The Wichita Board of Education approved an application process Monday for a new representative to finish McCray-Miller’s term.

Unlike the other seats on the seven-person board, any registered voter who lives in the school district can serve as an at-large member. Other requirements include passing a background check and participating in a public interview on May 15.

The application for the seat went live April 7 and will remain open until noon April 22. It must be turned in, along with three references, via postal mail or hand-delivered to board clerk Litona Hoyt before the deadline. Emailed documents or applications will not be accepted.

Qualified candidates will then participate in a public interview to be held at a special board meeting on May 15.

The board then can appoint a candidate at that meeting or resume the search for an at-large member. If appointed on May 15, the new member will be able to participate in the June 1 meeting. The term will last through December 2027.

The application and additional information about the at-large seat can be found on the district’s website.
