Wichita State, other Kansas universities want to increase tuition. See by how much
The Kansas Board of Regents will vote Thursday on a request that would increase Wichita State University students’ tuition by 3.9%.
The tuition increase would come out to an additional cost of $141.30 per semester for an undergraduate resident student taking 15 credit hours per semester, the proposal says. This would equal $3,764.55 per semester for in-state full time students.
“The increase is estimated to generate $3.6 million in tuition revenue and will be used to offset increased operating costs that include utilities, contracts, fringe benefits, and student scholarships,” Wichita State’s proposal reads.
While Wichita State did not change tuition in fiscal years 2022 and 2023, the school increased tuition by 5.9% last year. The school has seen a total increase of 8.02% in the last five years, with an average of a 1.6% increase per year, according to the proposal submitted to KBOR.
As for fees, the proposal is requesting a $39.64 increase to the student support services fee, which comes out to a 5.64% increase. This fee has increased by 3.46% over the last four years. Technology, transportation and the campus infrastructure and support fees are all proposed to stay as they are.
Fees and tuition combined would be $180.94 more every semester for an undergraduate resident student.
Additionally, the school is also requesting a 2.56% increase of the College of Fine Arts’ course fee, a 3.2% increase of the College of Engineering course fee and a 4.1% increase of the Barton School of Business college course fee.
What about other state universities in Kansas?
Wichita State is not the only Kansas public university that is requesting a tuition increase Thursday.
Kansas State University in Manhattan is looking for a 2.8% increase in tuition, the University of Kansas in Lawrence is requesting a 3.5% increase in tuition and Fort Hays State University, located in Hays, Kansas, is requesting a 6% tuition increase.
Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, is requesting a 3.5% increase in resident undergraduate tuition and a 1.2% increase for nonresident undergraduate tuition. For nonresident graduate students, the school is requesting a 1.4% increase.
Emporia State University is the only state college not requesting a tuition increase.
