Wichita North High unveils its new RedHawks mascot logo
The North High RedHawks now have a logo for their new mascot.
The logo was revealed at a student assembly Thursday afternoon.
The unveiling comes nearly three months after the RedHawks mascot name was revealed in December.
The logo features a stylized bird design with a side view showing its head, beak and wings. The main logo is supplemented by other related versions.
City Council member Maggie Ballard, a North High alumna, shared her thoughts on the new logo during the assembly.
“Some of my friends that joined me, we actually got a little emotional about it,” Ballard said. “We’re just excited about this new era of North High.”
North dropped its longtime Redskins name in February 2021 after a committee created by Wichita Public Schools said it was harmful to Native Americans and their culture.
“I just like that the logo is still representing the native roots of the school,” North High graduate Mason Day said. “I feel like the design of the logo fits perfectly with the architecture and the overall design of the school and doesn’t stray too far from North’s identity as a whole.”
North alumnus Bill Gardner designed the logo for free and attended the reveal ceremony. Gardner owns Wichita design shop Gardner Design in College Hill.
