Police: Man stabbed more than 25 times; brother arrested

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the Wednesday stabbing of his brother at the apartment they share in south Wichita, police said.

The sister of the two men called 911 shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday to say that her brother was dead inside the apartment at 1627 S. Erie, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said. Officers and first responders arrived and discovered that the 20-year-old man was still alive.

He was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and remains in “extremely critical condition” in the intensive care unit, Ojile said.

“He was stabbed over 25 times over multiple areas of his body,” Ojile said of the victim.

His brother was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis for treatment of a cut to his hand and then transported to City Hall for interrogation. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail shortly before 11:30 p.m. on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.

Police haven’t recovered the weapon and do not know what prompted the stabbing, Ojile said. There is no history of clashes between the brothers that included police being called to the residence, he said.

The brothers share that residence with the sister who called 911, he said. Based on information gleaned during questioning, Ojile said, it appears the brother was stabbed more than an hour before 911 was called.

“We do have a couple of witnesses who described hearing an argument coming from the residence,” Ojile said, but no neighbors witnessed the stabbing.
