A Wichita man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday after he pleaded guilty to killing his estranged wife.

Wearing an orange Sedgwick County Jail top and pants and handcuffed, Edward A. Millan-Volcan was emotionless while he learned of his sentence through a court-appointed interpreter Thursday.

The sentence was handed down by Sedgwick County District Judge Kevin Smith.

Millan-Volcan, 26, pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder and attempted first-degree murder following the July 17, 2025, stabbing death of Sinay Leon-Montoya.

A second woman, Germany Torres Figueroa, was also stabbed, but survived the attack. Police said the attack occurred in front of Leon-Montoya’s children.

According to the sentencing agreement, Millan-Volcan could be eligible for parole on the murder charge after 25 years.

His sentence for the attempted murder charge carries a prison term of over 13 years, meaning Millan-Volcan could be released from prison in close to 39 years. The two sentences will be served consecutively, or back to back, Smith said.

During the sentencing hearing, which lasted about 15 minutes, Millan-Volcan asked for forgiveness. He made the statement through the interpreter.

While she wasn’t present in the courtroom Thursday, Torres Figueroa sent a victim impact statement, which was also read by the interpreter.

“I will never be able to forgive you,” she said in the statement. She also called Leon-Montoya, 27 at the time of her death, a “wonderful person” and scolded Millan-Volcan for taking the life of “the mother of his kids.”

According to court records, Leon-Montoya and Millan-Volcan were in an abusive relationship that she was trying to leave when he stabbed her more than 60 times at their Wichita apartment.

Leon-Montoya had left the apartment earlier in the day and called 911, saying she needed help because Millan-Volcan was hitting and choking her and threatening to kill her and her children, an affidavit said.

District Attorney Marc Bennett and Assistant District Attorney Sophia Brunetti prosecuted the case.
