A Wichita man who stabbed his estranged wife in front of their young children last year has pleaded guilty to murdering her and trying to kill another woman who attempted to stop him.

Edward A. Millan-Volcan, 26, pleaded guilty on Friday to first-degree felony murder and attempted murder in connection with the July 17, 2025, attack that left 27-year-old Sinay Y. Leon-Montoya dead.

Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Lyndsee Stover said Millan-Volcan entered the plea before District Judge Kevin Mark Smith.

Millan-Volcan is scheduled for sentencing on July 16, she said.

“He faces a minimum of 38.75 years in the Kansas Department of Corrections,” Stover said. A first-degree felony murder conviction carries a presumptive sentence of life in prison with parole eligibility after 25 years, according to Kansas sentencing guidelines. Attempted murder carries a presumptive sentence of approximately 12 to 54 years in prison, depending on a defendant’s prior criminal history.

Court records say Leon-Montoya and Millan-Volcan were in an abusive relationship that she was trying to leave when he stabbed her more than 60 times at their apartment, 6801 W. Par Lane. Leon-Montoya had left the apartment earlier in the day and called 911, saying she needed help because Millan-Volcan was hitting and choking her and threatening to kill her and her children, an affidavit says.

But before police could respond, she told the dispatcher that she was going back home “due to something happening to one of her children,” according to the affidavit.

After she arrived, Millan-Volcan forced her, the children and the other woman into a bedroom and stabbed both women. Police found Leon-Montoya on the floor next to a three-inch long scratch awl from a hand tool set, the affidavit says.

She was pronounced dead at a Wichita hospital. The medical examiner who performed her autopsy noted more than 60 puncture wounds to her chest, neck, arms, back and the back of her head, including 21 that penetrated her heart and lungs, according to the affidavit.
