U.S. Marshals arrest suspect in Wichita killing in Topeka
A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Topeka in connection with the April 11 killing of William Johnson in Wichita.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested the man in Topeka on a warrant issued in the case. He will be transferred to Sedgwick County and booked on charges related to Johnson’s death, according to a police department press release.
Officers were dispatched to Kellogg and Dugan early on April 11 after receiving reports of gunfire. They found evidence of a disturbance in a parking lot in the 6300 block of West Kellogg, according to the police department.
A separate call was then received indicating that two men had arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds. A 37-year-old, later identified as Johnson, was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 54-year-old man was treated for severe injuries and later released.
The investigation determined the shooting stemmed from a disturbance that occurred before the gunfire, according to the police department. Homicide investigators continued following leads, ultimately identifying a suspect and securing an arrest warrant.
“This arrest is the result of the relentless work of our homicide investigators and the strong partnership we have with the United States Marshals Service,” Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in the press release. “Their commitment to this investigation helped bring us to this point. While an arrest has been made, our work is not over, and we remain committed to seeking justice for William Johnson and his family.”
